The Afghan Whigs

Mainstage

Saturday 23:00 - 00:10

Anyone who has ever seen The Afghan Whigs live at work knows that Rock Herk will crackle like never before. From the moment frontman Greg Dulli and his band step on stage, there is electricity in the air. Since the late 1980s, The Afghan Whigs have built an impressive oeuvre that uniquely combines bleeding grunge, a touch of soul-rock, R&B and a hearty helping of bombast. There are few bands that span several generations and also manage to attract new fans each time. Surfing the waves of grunge, The Afghan Whigs first appeared on the world stage in the early 1990s with cult hit Debonair. Soon the Cincinnati-based band grew into a leading rock band with thunderous concerts at Pukkelpop, Rock Werchter, Pinkpop and Lowlands. The unadulterated garage sound of the early years soon gained depth with soul and R&B influences, among others. The 1996 album Black Love was a first big success, as was 1965 two years later. After splitting in 2001, Greg Dulli forms The Gutter Twins with Mark Lanegan. It eventually takes until 2012 for The Afghan Whigs to reunite. But with new albums Do The Beast, Gentlemen and the delightfully-melancholic In Spades, the band continues to reinvent itself. Afghan Whigs come over from the US for a unique concert in Europe especially for the fortieth anniversary.
